Pre-workouts are something that I seem to rely on a lot at the moment when it comes to getting hyped up for my workouts. Commuting three and a half hours a day and working 9-5 in a city 34 miles away really takes it’s toll.
Most of the time my workouts aren’t until about 8pm and I’m usually close to exhausted by then. Hence the huge reliance on pre-workouts.
Recently I decided to try Optimum Nutritions Gold Standard Pre-workout as I had heard some good and some bad things about it. It was super cheap on amazon at the time priced at £17.36 for the Watermelon flavour.
I’m not a big watermelon fan at all, but I thought I’d give it a go anyway, since the price for that flavour was a lot cheaper than the rest and I was running short on cash towards the end of the month.
- 175 mg caffeine from natural sources
- 3 g Creatine
- Vitamins B1, B3, B5, B6, B12
- 1.5 g Beta Alanine (CarnoSyn)
- 1.5 g L-Citrulline
Not the most amazing of quantities per serving, but I personally feel that it’s enough for me to feel some sort of effect on my workouts. This may vary depending on the person, but you could probably double scoop if you felt you needed more.
Needless to say, I’ve been completely blown away by how good it tastes. Probably one of the nicest tasting and easiest to drink pre-workouts that I’ve tried, and I’ve tried quite a lot in my time.
It mixes really well, with 1 scoop of the stuff to around 350ml of water. The taste is quite tingly, but it’s a really nice taste with no bad aftertastes at all.
Usually I take it around 20 minutes before working out and I’ve got tingly fingers by the time I get to the gym, which some people like and others really don’t.
For me, I quite enjoy the tingles as it lets me know something is kicking in and whether it actually does improve my workout or just psychologically pumps me up, I don’t really know to be honest.
Given that I take it so late, it doesn’t leave me trying to scrape myself off the ceiling when geting to sleep and I go to bed around 4 hours after I’ve taken it, so for me it’s great in that way.
Pricepoint is very competitive in my eyes and for the flavour alone, I would happily make this my go to pre-workout for the coming months. Definitely going to be trying the other flavours in the range to see if they are as nice as this one, but you always seem to get great taste when it comes to Optimum Nutrition products.
Would highly recommend this workout to others looking for a change.
